Do hair stylists prefer their customers to make conversation, or sit in silence?

Whenever I get my hair cut, I feel the need to talk the whole time, as my remaining silent seems rude.. I notice some people who have their cut are chatterboxes, others don't utter a single word.

For those who style and cut hair- do you take offense if the customer in the chair is silent, or do you prefer conversation?

Hi, you're not the only one. I find it's ok just to sit after discuss about what you would like to do with your hair. If you have a question then ask the hairdresser otherwise keep it cool, read your magazine and smile sometimes. If the hairdresser talks to you, then you should answer. There are many customers in and out everyday, therefore it's ok for you if you choose to stay silent when you want to.

Hope you are well and happy.

No, sometimes its nice to have a quiet client! But we know getting into the business that we'll be talking just as much as styling! :)

Conversation is always good, but what a lot of people mistake is that yes conversation is good but they do most of the talking, ask your hairstlyist some questions if she is up for it and will answer them, try to get to know her too. Because sitting there just listening to you talk for an hour straight is almost as bad as sitting in silence.

my hair stylists calls me all the time and when im there she is the chatterbox lol. shes great though. i think it depends on who it is not everyone likes to chat as much but some of them will try to make conversastion, you should be able to tell if they wanna communicate or not

Talking is a chick thing. They can talk about their hair for hours - which I think is why a girl's hair cut is 3x more expensive then a guys. I don't usually talk much after I say, "Shave the sides with a #3 razor, and leave the top about an inch long."

I guess it depends on what kind of hair stylist you get. Some hairstylists are concentrating so hard on their work that they have no time to talk to you. However, some other hair stylists who are good at their job, may be more confident and relaxed with their work and what their doing. They might also be more experienced at the job, too. These kind of hair stylists will probably want to make some conversation:)

hair stylists love it if you praise their work. like all others , hair stylists hate to hear about your lifes problem............cause they have many of their own. so next time you go to a hair stylist, talk about neutral topics and please leave religion and politics out..........the hair stylist may hate you if you dont.

my barbers poke my head with scissors as i try to speak.

he say oh i make mistake but I know he do this from spite

as he do this action to others as well. At times he ask questions of you. If you answer him he poke you for talking.

He say oh look I make error and poke once again. So I say to you not to speak. Remain silent and not answer the questions if any are asked of you.

Well it really depends on the customer. Some people come in and think of it as their time for pampering and relax while getting their hair done, so I usually just make small talk but let them relax.

On the other hand, some of my customers I have known since we were kids so I talk their heads off as do they mine.

It just depends on the person, feel it out, lol, but no offense is taken if the customer just sits in silence.
